Camberley is the main town in the borough of Surrey Heath. It has a very good shopping centre including the Army and Navy and Allders department stores. Just outside the town, technically just into Berkshire, is a huge Marks and Spencer department store (their third largest in the world) and a Tesco superstore. The town boasts all the amenities of a modern town - pubs, restaurants, nightclubs, a leisure centre and a cozy cinema. Camberley was nothing before the Royal Military Academy moved to its present site in 1812. The population in 1811 was a negligible 711. When the RMA moved to the area from Great Marlow a civilian town called New Town was built at its gates. Its name later became Cambridge Town and a second town built nearby was called Yorktown. The two merged together and to avoid confusion with the city of Cambridge, Cambridge Town was renamed Camberley in the 1870s. The town retains its army links. It is well served by road and rail links to London, Heathrow and the south cost. Trains to Waterloo take less than an hour, while Heathrow is just a 20 minute drive away. Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton can all be reached by car in under an hour. .
